POWERBOAT SUPERLEAGUE CONGRATULATES THE 2010 AWARD RECIPIENTS - During the recent 2010 Superleague Awards Banquet teams, drivers, champions, and those who came close, as well as Best Dressed, Rookies, Improved Performance, Crew Person of the Year, Staff Officer of the Year and the 2010 Sportsman were announced and honored.
In the F3 category: Brent Dillard took home first place as well as being named the winner of both the Checkered Challenger and the Ken Warby Award. Tammy Wolf-Jakob followed in second and Mike Hooper in third also received the Canadian Cup Award. Dana Tomes was named Rookie of the Year and Terry Finley received recognition as the F3 driver with the most improved position in his class moving from not being ranked in 2009 to an 11th place finish in 2010.
F2 Competition: After a tight race throughout the season, Donnie McDowell earned the F2 championship, Terry Rinker, just 6 points behind placed second and Mark Jakob, with his win in Kankakee moved from fifth to third. While not a rookie to tunnel boat racing, Jimmie Merleau earned the F2 rookie honor for his performance during his first year with Superleague, placing in the top five as well as fielding the overall Ken Warby Award. Terry Rinker also received the award for Improved Position going from 11th in 2009 to 2nd in his first full season of Superleague racing.
A complete listing of all teams and overall finish can be found by going to “results and standings” on this web site.
Betty May Award: Out-pacing the other nominees, Rinker Racing, with their bright yellow Amsoil shirts was named the Best Dressed team for 2010.
Larry Bowden Crew Member of the Year: Honors in this category went to Sam Haraway. Producing winners seems to come naturally for Sam, first as the crew chief for his son Neil (past F3 Superleague champion) and now as an integral member of Tammy Wolf’s crew as well as an advisor for Carole Reno. Other Superleague members often consult Sam for his endless knowledge of outboard motors and his patience in explaining the intricacies of racing is legendary.
Superleague Staff Officer: Joining the officiating team for the first time in Marietta, Doug Rea managed the starting dock with efficiency and humor; his no-nonsense style kept the dock operation running smoothly. Teams as well as other staff members appreciated his efforts by naming him the winner of the staff award.
Ken Winkle Superleague Sportsman of the Year: An overwhelming majority of the votes went to Donnie McDowell as Sportsman of the Year. Always ready to race, always smiling, quietly lending a hand when possible, McDowell was really surprised to receive the award. “I thought that becoming the Superleague F2 Champion for the second time was the best thing that ever happened to me in racing, but this is even better.”
POWERBOAT SUPERLEAGUE CARTERSVILLE/BANQUET GAZETTE IS NOW AVAILABLE - Everything you need to know about the annual banquet can be found in the latest edition of the Superleague Gazette. The ballot is included at the end - don’t forget to vote for your deserving favorites.
DAN SCHWARTZ UPDATE - Dan is slowly improving. Cards and notes can be sent to him at the following address: Patient: Dan Schwartz, Loyola University Medical Center, 2160 South First Avenue, Maywood, IL 60153-5585.
IN MEMORIUM - with great sadness we received the news that Jim Summers (Overland Park, Kansas) has passed away. After an extended period of battling cancer, Jim died with his wife Carrie at his side. Some of you will remember Jim from his early races with Powerboat Superleague and IOGP as a Mod VP driver; many of you will remember Jim as an SST 120/F2 competitor. We join the Summers family – Carrie and his children, Jocelyn and James – in mourning his death and celebrating his life. Cards and letters of support should be sent to Carrie Summers, 13300 W 137th Place, Overland Park, KS 66221. A memorial service is planned for a later date.

POWERBOAT SUPERLEAGUE CHAMPIONS -
CONGRATULATIONS to Brent Dillard (F3/#80) and Donnie Mc Dowell (F2/#3) for becoming the 2010 Powerboat Superleague Champions. In both classes there was excellent racing and close competition throughout the 2010 season. Every team and each driver provided fans with memorable moments and heart-stopping action as they powered their way to the final standings.
F3 RANKINGS: For Dillard this is a three-peat win during his F3 Superleague career. Tammy Wolf-Jakob earned the second spot in the record book, the first time that a woman has reached that position and Mike Hooper rounds out the F3 top three. Hooper also takes home the Canadian Cup Award given annually to the Canadian top points winner (from both classes). Rookie of the Year goes to Dana Tomes and Terry Finley becomes the 2010 Most Improved Driver in the class.
F2 RANKINGS: It was too close to call until the final standings were calculated in the F2 class. Coming out of Kankakee, only five points separate first and second place. With 833 points, McDowell has emerged as the winner with Rinker just six points behind in second place, the closest championship competition in the 24-year history of Powerboat Superleague. With a come-from-behind effort, Mark Jakob holds the F2 number three position. Rookie of the Year honor goes to Jimmie Merleau and the Most Improved Driver is Terry Rinker.
Complete standings and a list of the 2010 Powerboat Superleague competitors can be found on this web site by clicking on the results and standings button (found to the left) on this page.
JIM SUMMERS - Jim’s wife Carrie has told the Superleague office that Jim has been moved to a hospice care home. It is a very difficult time for the entire Summers’ family – so your cards, letters and notes are really important. All of us have been given the unique opportunity to be able to say goodbye to a valued member of the Superleague family. Don’t worry about what to say, the fact that you care will shine through. Be one of the voices that say with deep compassion that we share in the difficult time, even though our collective hearts are breaking. Carrie has asked that cards, notes and letters be sent to their home address – Jocelyn and James (their daughter and son) will make sure that Jim and Carrie receive them. Send correspondence to: Jim Summers, 13300 W 137th Place, Overland Park, KS 66221

CONDOLENCES - Powerboat Superleague offers
it deepest sympathy to Kris Shepard (F2/SST 120, #46, Antioch, IL) on the death of his
father.
BILL MASTRO RETURNS - Powerboat Superleague has received an EMAIL FROM Bill
Mastro (#89/Punta Gorda, FL) letting us know that he is not only on the road to recovery
but also has doctor’s permission to race. “… after 45 IVs I was
beginning to feel like a pin cushion but the doctor has cleared me for racing. I might
not be up front (in Aurora) but at least I will be back on the water with my friends.”
CONGRATULATIONS to Uvis Slakteris - Powerboat
Superleague sends their congratulations to Slakteris (#51/Latvia) and his crew for their
first place finish during a recent tunnel boat race in Uddevalla (Sweden/Europe). Uvis
raced with Superleague during the 2008 UIM World Championships in Marietta, Ohio.
POWERBOAT SUPERLEAGUE with the EQT PITTSBURGH THREE RIVERS REGATTA Television Show premiers August 10, at 8 PM (Eastern) on FSN Pittsburgh.
SAM MILLER RETURNS - Powerboat Superleague
has received an advance registration from Sam Miller (#7, Kankakee, IL - Formula
3/SST60) for the 13th annual A Roar of Thunder regatta in Aurora, IN. Sam has spent most
of the 2010 season in the pits as crew due to health reasons. However, his doctor has
just released him for racing.
“TIGHTEST POINTS RACE IN SUPERLEAGUE’S 24-YEAR HISTORY” - According
to Powerboat Superleague partner, Sam Winer, the narrow points spread between the top
five contenders in the F2 class and the competition among the second, third and fourth
place drivers in F3/SST 60 has set all records in the race for Superleague overall
champions.
F3/SST 60: Dillard is in front with 540 points but the race for second,
third and fourth is definitely not clear. Carole Reno holds the second position with 445
points, Hooper in third has 426 and Wolf-Jakob is just 13 points behind him.
F2/SST 120: McDowell currently holds the number one position with 470 but
the win in Memphis moved Terry Rinker from fifth in the standings to second boosting his
cumulative points to 437. Two points separate Merleau (3rd/435) from the second spot and
he is well positioned to move forward. Jeff Reno holds the fourth slot (420) just five
ticks from third, while Jakob (5th/419) is breathing down Reno’s transom just one
point out.
It’s pressure cooker competition and this is what fans have come to expect from
Powerboat Superleague – the best in F2/SST 120 and F3/SSt 60 racing.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT – IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT – THE HURON, OHIO EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED -
We regret to announce that the final Superleague race of the 2010 season has been
cancelled by the promoter. On July 16 we received the signed agreement and we were
assured that the event was going forward. Subsequently Janie Vogel/ProRace Management
has informed us that there was no sponsor for the powerboat races. Without sufficient
funding, the race cannot proceed. We have informed APBA to pull the sanction and we are
sorry for any inconveniences that this late cancellation may have caused. The City of
Huron (not the sponsor, simply the location) was looking forward to having the series
come to their town and we dislike having to disappoint the many fans that have contacted
us.

MAKIN' WAVES IN MEMPHIS - the 2nd annual
Memphis International Riverfront Regatta is heating up and the city is ready to host
Powerboat Superleague. The press conference is scheduled for 2 PM on Thursday when the
event schedule will be revealed. It's not too late to make plans to join us in Memphis
for racing, blues and barbeque July 30 through August 1.
SUPERLEAGUE WELCOME - to Alyssa Petroni as
she joins the ranks of the SST 60/F3 drivers. Joe Schulte Racing has tapped Petroni to
complete the remainder of the Superleague 2010 season in the #6 boat. Yvonne Koenig
(Dresden Germany) campaigned the boat for the first 2 races in Pittsburgh and Marietta;
the wheel has now passed to Superleague's newest rookie.
HURON, OH EVENT ANNOUNCES NEW SPONSOR - We
are pleased that the newest Superleague race is on track (the sanction was sent this
morning). Local producer ProRace Management LLC has just announced that Nationwide has
become a sponsor of the race. Superleague thanks to the newest event sponsor, Nationwide
for their participation as part of our newest race - the Lake Erie Boat Week.
SUPERLEAGUE YELLOW CARDS - As we discussed during the Superleague annual meeting, we are posting the number of yellow cards and the reasons for issuing the cards. After 2 races completed the following cards are on record: Pittsburgh – 1 yellow card (F3 class) failure to respond to radio check. Marietta: 1 yellow card – failure to respond to radio request from Assistant Referee, 1 yellow card – failure to follow Chief Referee’s instructions as given in morning drivers’ briefing, 2 yellow cards – failure to follow inspector’s order.
SPORT participation in MEMPHIS - Powerboat Superleague is allowing 2010 SPORT members complimentary Superleague membership status for the Memphis race. This means that if you are a current SPORT member you will receive the discounted Superleague entry fee and you will receive the Superleague tow money – calculated on the one-way mileage from the race site to your hometown (using Microsoft Street and Trips).
SST 45 CLASS and MEMPHIS - Attention all SST
45 drivers and teams. Do not believe the rumors racing about. Your class – SST 45
– is on the Memphis sanction and Powerboat Superleague plans to honor the APBA
sanction as we always do. We plan to race your class, as promised. The prize money, the
entry fee and the tow money are exactly as described in our Memphis Gazette (available
on this web site) APBA points for both days will be awarded. You will be racing for not
just points but also prize money and trophies. You do not need to run the VP Racing Fuel
however that fuel is used as the standard for all fuel testing. You will receive some
television coverage and we regret the fact that after PTT promised its support and PTT
points, their Board of Directors called last week to inform us that they would no longer
consider the Memphis race a PTT event. We welcome all of you and look forward to having
you as part of the Memphis race – where we are “making waves.”
THANK YOU - We often see demonstrations by
Superleague members – those who travel that extra mile to make something work to
the benefit of everyone. There are a few people that need to be thanked for their
combined efforts in keeping the Superleague rescue boat running. In particular we need
to acknowledge Jim Bremer, Tim Calhoun and Rick McChesney for the recent work on the
Superleague skiff’s engine. It was their efforts plus more from people that we did
not know (or know about) that put the primary boat back in working order. THANK YOU!
SUPERLEAGUE AND YOU TUBE -
SUPERLEAGUE AND YOU TUBE – Dan Lawrence has posted a video taken by Christian
Langer of the 2010 EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta. Great footage and gives anyone
that missed this exciting race a small sample of Superleague’s life in the fast
lane. Go to the Hydroracer TV web site or the Hydro racer TV facebook page and click on
the link. While your are in You Tube check out the other exciting videos that have been
posted over the past few years.

AMSOIL Becomes Championship Choice Sponsor
of Powerboat Superleague Circuit with cash contribution of $5,000 to the year-end prize fund. Both classes – F2 and F3, will share money.
- The FIRST in synthetics - AMSOIL, backed by Comparative Performance Testing and customer belief, is
the leading manufacturer of the world’s best synthetic oils, greases, air and oil
filtration and maintenance products. Now AMSOIL, with product applications for all forms
of motorsports including marine engines and powerboat racing, is bringing their
developed-for-racing products to Powerboat Superleague teams as the Championship Choice
year-end high-points fund sponsor.
In tunnel boat racing, in particular with the super stock classes, performance,
reliability and engine durability are critical to reaching the finish line and AMSOIL
understands. Bottom line – if it has an engine, rotates or requires any type of
lubrication AMSOIL has a product of unsurpassed quality. You have a lot of money tied up
in your equipment why trust it to anything less than the best from the world’s
leading synthetic lubricant manufacturer. Designed to protect engine components, reduce
emissions, last longer, reduce fuel consumption and help to prevent environmental
pollution, AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oils out-perform conventional petroleum oils on all
counts.
AMSOIL has contributed $5,000 (cash) to the Powerboat Superleague
year-end high-points fund. Both classes have a stake in the points fund and every
driver/team, whether they place first or last, will earn a share if they are 2010
Powerboat Superleague members and have competed in a minimum of three Superleague
sanctioned races. Additionally, AMSOIL products will be distributed to each team at
every event – allowing every race entry to learn first-hand the benefits of the
AMSOIL product line. For more information on AMSOIL and their complete product line go

TOP FOUR PLACES HOTLY CONTESTED -
in Superleague F2/SST 120 Class – Excellent racing during the first two Superleague events in
Pittsburgh and Marietta has tightened the F2/SST 120 points chase to a very narrow
margin. Currently at the top of the leader board, Donnie McDowell, 2008 Superleague
class Champion, holds a five-point margin over Jimmie Merleau in second with 300 points.
Mark Jakob follows in third just five points behind Merleau and Jeff Reno is charging
with only 10 points to make up in the next race in Memphis – one of his favorites.
Complete standings and statistics can be found along with the latest results on this web
site.
Superleague F3/SST 60 Women continue to charge - Coming
out of the Marietta, Ohio event, Carole Reno and Tammy Wolf-Jakob continue to hold two
of the top three positions in the F3/SSt 60-points chase. Brent Dillard, defending
Superleague F3/SST 60 class Champion, has nailed first place and a good lead with a
60-point margin but the race for the second and third place slots are definitely
contested. Reno is currently in second and Wolf-Jakob is only 17 points behind in third.
Mike Hooper, with a second place podium finish in Marietta has moved from a 7th place
tie to a solid 4th, opening the door for advancing into the top three. Complete
standings and statistics can be found along with the latest results on this web site.

LADIES SET A SUPERLEAGUE RECORD -
CONGRATULATIONS to Carole Reno and Tammy Wolf-Jakob on their second and third places finishes during
the SST 60/F3 North American Championship, part of the EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers
Regatta, this past weekend. For the first time in our 24-year history, two women gained
podium finishes and joined the winner’s circle at the same event in the same
class. Brent Dillard, the winner and new North American Champion, was surrounded by
solid competition but managed to retain his title, as the defending champion of the EQT
Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta and become the new holder of the SST 60/F3 NAC title.
MARIETTA - TWO DAYS AND COUNTING TO THE FIRST FLASH OF THE STARTERS FLAG FOR THE 10TH CELEBRATION OF THE MARIETTA RIVERFRONT ROAR.
Yvonne Koenig, Dresden Germany - fielded a fourth place finish in her inaugural Superleague race. With just 15 minutes of seat time, Koenig took her place on the starting grid in a category, class and boat she had never driven. At the end of the day, Koenig had shortened the learning curve and nailed a stunning 4th place during the NAC final of the EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta. With the race under her belt, she is looking forward to more test time and the opportunity to work on the set up and props for the race this weekend in Marietta.
MERLEAU AND ORCHARD - are both back in their respective homes and doing well after separate incidents with fuel fumes which caused them to pull out of the NAC finals in Pittsburgh. Both were racing well, running in the top five but were forced to pull to the ramp, Orchard on lap 2 and Merleau at the end of the 10th. Orchard was treated and released on site; Merleau was treated on site but was then sent to the ER for further evaluation but released later that same evening.
JAKOB RETAINS HIS NAC TITLE -
Mark Jakob managed to outlast the field and successfully defend his SST 120/F2 North American Championship title during the annual running of the EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta. The win in Pittsburgh was a repeat performance for Jakob giving him the 2010 SST 120/F2 NAC title rights for the second time in a row. Shortened by 10 laps, Jakob was declared the winner when there was no time left for a restart after Rinker barrel-rolled going into turn 2. Donnie McDowell finished second and Jeff Reno posted a solid third. Although Dan Orchard could not return to the racecourse, his time trial earned him the Rivers Cup for the best time – best speed.

North American Championships Awarded to Powerboat Superleague For EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta -
During the American Power Boat Association (APBA) annual meeting, the Racing Commission received and
reviewed bids for the 2010 North American Championships (NAC). After hearing from the
various circuits seeking the championship rights, the NAC title was awarded to Powerboat
Superleague and their location choice – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The Formula Two (SST120) and Formula Three (SST 60) North American Championship races
(one for each class) will take place in Pittsburgh on July 3 and 4 during the annual EQT
Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta, along Pittsburgh’s North Shore.
“The area’s longstanding appreciation of powerboat racing,
the incredible marketing and promotional efforts of ISMUSA, and the continuing
dedication of the regatta Board of Directors to present to the area fans the best inland
powerboat event -- one of the largest in the nation with an annual draw of more than
500,000 people -- contributed to the final decision. The remarkable cooperation between
the management company, the regatta board, the sponsors, the City of Pittsburgh and the
State of Pennsylvania were equally important. It is the continuing support of the public
and private entities that make the Pittsburgh event such a success and those elements
made the EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta the logical choice for the site of the 2010
North American Championships,” noted Powerboat Superleague officials.
This event, a highlight of the season for Formula Two and Formula Three
teams, will give the drivers the ability to earn bonus points (for participating in a
North American Championship title event) in addition to regular points, as well as their
purse and other prizes, making the race even more attractive.
The Championships will bring more competitors to the area including a
team from Germany and possibly a team from the combined countries of Italy and the
Dominican Republic. Currently, three Canadian drivers have pre-registered as well as
fourteen teams from the United States.
Continuing information for the event and the race will be released as
details become available. Circuit information can be accessed via
www.aprsuperleague.com.
Regatta event details, including the activities schedule and racing
times, can be found on the EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta web site

Powerboat Superleague’s Memphis TV-
Like the Energizer Bunny, the 2009 Memphis International Riverfront Regatta TV program just keeps going
and going… Latest SportSouth broadcast updates via Romesburg Media LLC indicate
that the program will air again (!) on Sunday, May 30 at 1 AM, Tuesday, June 1 at 8:30
PM and on June 5, Saturday, at 2 AM.
“The show just keeps setting records – there are 27
additional broadcasts, far beyond the initial contracted amount. This makes the
Powerboat Superleague show the longest running boat racing television program to date,”
explained Superleague officials. The exposure time for everyone from the City of
Memphis, the event sponsors and local event producers, to the circuit and the teams is
certainly unprecedented and makes the initial investment in the event far more valuable
that originally promised.”

Championship choice level of circuit sponsorship with yearend awards for drivers in both
classes. The top three in F2/SST 120 and F3/SST 60 will receive certificates for 2011
fuel purchases – 15 gallons for first, 10 gallons for second and 5 gallons for
third. Additionally, the Rookie of the Year in each class will receive a fuel
certificate for 10 gallons and the Most Improved Driver in each class will receive
5-gallon certificates.
Detailed information on ordering your 2010 fuel requirements can be found
in earlier BUZZ posts or by emailing Powerboat Superleague. Powerboat Superleague is
proud of their association with VP Racing Fuels and we welcome them back to our
Championship Circle.
“TRIED ‘EM ALL. WIN OR LOSE, WE ALWAYS HAVE FUN.”
Meet Joe Schulte a new SST 60/F3 team owner -
According to Joe Schulte, one of Superleague’s new SST 60/F3 boat owners, no matter what he or
his team was racing, they always had fun. Now he’s ready for a new experience,
racing tunnel boats. For the past several years Schulte has been running (as an
owner/driver) in the APBA Historic and Vintage category. (We met Joe in High Point,
North Carolina during the vintage demonstration.) In addition to his involvement with
vintage boats as an owner/driver and Region 6 rep, Schulte has competed in the APBA
inboard and stock outboard categories as well as with land-based racing in motorcycles,
midget, sprint and drag cars. In his words, “…it’s worth noting that
I sold my vintage inboard boats but I still own a Glastron-Molinari tunnel that Dick
Sharpe raced at Havasu and Parker in 1970.”
A native of Detroit, Michigan, Joe’s interest in powerboat racing
was ignited while he watched the Unlimiteds race on the Detroit River. “It was
only natural that I would try my hand at stock outboard racing where, I can report, I
achieved no success whatsoever.” In time Joe moved from the water to the land,
racing motorcycles and cars before back to boat racing. Currently Joe is the new owner
of the SST 60/F3 Pittman hull (formerly owned and campaigned by Pat and Blair Kants). He
has completed agreements with his drivers and has named Jeff Ettinger as his crew chief.
“Not sure of the team colors though I would bet on shades of red, white and blue.
There is no sponsor right now; we are dedicating our energies to getting the boat
prepared.”
We look forward to seeing the results of Joe’s hard work and
preparation. Please join us in welcoming the SST 60/F3 Schulte race team to the
Powerboat Superleague family.
With Sympathy -
Powerboat Superleague extends their condolences to SST 60/F3 driver Bill Mastro, his wife Sharon and
his family on the death of his mother, Anna A. (Polletta) Mastro. A week later, Bill’s
aunt/godmother (his mom’s sister) passed away and shortly thereafter, another
family member and then a close friend died. As you can see, life has been very difficult
for Bill and Sharon. Keep them in your hearts and thoughts as they move through this
period of mourning. Expressions of sympathy may be sent in Mrs. Mastro’s memory to
Saint Camillus Health Center, 447 Hill Street, Whitinsville, MA 01588. Cards should be
sent to: Bill and Sharon Mastro, 2706 Mayaguana Court, Punta Gorda, FL 33950.

IMPORTANT RACING INFORMATION
POWERBOAT SUPERLEAGUE 2010 FUEL REVIEW and POLICY -
Because it has become increasingly difficult to meet the local fire regulations as well as the
safety/hazardous materials policies of our race sites we will no longer sell fuel on
site. Additionally, having the fuel shipped to the races was simply becoming too
expensive. Last year, Superleague covered the shipping costs and did not pass that
amount on to you, the drivers/teams. This is not feasible for 2010. However, when
reviewing our notes from the annual meeting in Cartersville as well as speaking with
some of you over the winter months, we understand the consensus is to continue with VP
Racing Fuels as the spec fuel for the series.
After reviewing all available options and taking into consideration
insurance risks, we have developed the following new fuel policy for the 2010-racing
season.
1. VP is the spec fuel. (VP Marine and MS 93) This means that the
inspector will calibrate the fuel testing equipment to the VP fuel formulas.
2. There will be no minimum amounts required per class.
3. You must purchase/provide your fuel prior to arriving at a Superleague
event – it will not be available at the race site.
4. This revised policy replaces the Superleague rule covering fuel.
In order to facilitate the above, Jason Rueckert with VP Racing Fuels in
Terre Haute, Indiana will help you to place fuel orders, assist with shipping or make
arrangements for you to pick up fuel. Call Jason (812) 466-1175. He will assign everyone
a VP customer number. He is our representative and is the contact person assigned to the
Powerboat Superleague racing account. (note dealers do not necessarily have the
marine-use fuels) We have done the math to show you the options and available methods of
keeping your overall costs down.
Consider joining your friends and placing a bulk order or order enough
fuel for the year. See if there is a distributor along the routes to the race sites
– you can pick up fuel and avoid the shipping.
Analysis
2010 price of MS 93 = $7.03/gal.
2010 price of VP Marine = $7.09/gal
Shipping per 55 gal. drum (1 to 4 drums the cost is one fee) = $135
The more drums you order (up to 4) the less your cost per gallon
becomes:
1 drum VP Marine (the higher price)
– cost per gal. is $9.54 (shipping is $2.45/gal)
2 drums – cost per gal. is $8.31 (shipping is $1.22/gal)
3 drums – cost per gal. is $7.90 (shipping is $0.81/gal.)
4 drums – cost per gal. is $7.70 (shipping is $0.61/gal.)
Why all of this conversation about fuel? When asked in Cartersville and
later via emails from many of you, it became very clear that having a spec fuel
definitely levels the playing field – no fancy on-site labs by teams with larger
racing budgets. Also, the two VP Racing fuels currently in use have proven to be very
good for the engines. If you have questions concerning the new policy please don’t
hesitate to call the Superleague office.
Powerboat Superleague Television
Sets New Broadcast Record -
“Simply put – amazing,” explained Jarred Romesburg, Romesburg Media Group LLC
– the producer of the Powerboat Superleague television programs. “Twenty-six
broadcasts of the Memphis International Riverfront Regatta show on SportSouth (regional)
network (formerly Turner South). That’s an incredible number for what is known in
the industry as a one-off (single program not part of a 13-week series). I cannot recall
any show receiving that much play, especially in it’s debut with a network.”
With a broadcast area covering Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina and parts of
North Carolina as well as providing national access via Fox Sports affiliates and Direct
TV, SportSouth reaches an average audience of 8.9 million people. SportSouth viewers and
powerboat racing fans have proven their enjoyment of the show and their loyalty to
Superleague, continuing to tune into SportSouth over the course of the past seven months
to watch as SST 120/F2 and SST 60/F3 teams race during the popular one-hour program.
SportSouth has just announced that there will be seven additional
airings: Saturday, April 24 – 7PM, Sunday April 25 - 1 AM, Monday, April 26 - 1
PM, Saturday, May 1 - 2 PM, Sunday, May 9 - 9 AM, Thursday, May 13 – noon and
Wednesday, May 19 – 10PM. The addition of these new airdates has pushed the
numbers over the edge – while adding an estimated $20,000 in value to the
previously released numbers – unprecedented in what is perceived as a niche sport.
“A great product and a terrific television show – it’s definitely a
winning combination,” commented Superleague officials. “Our personal thanks
to Romesburg Media for an award-winning production and to I-Fun Entertainment, producers
of the Memphis race as well as their key sponsors: Memphis Riverfront Development and
the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau as well as the City of Memphis and of course
all of our fans for making everything possible.”

WOMEN IN POWERBOAT RACING -
Celebrating women’s history month – saving the best for last
In honor of women’s history month Powerboat Superleague has been highlighting women in
powerboat racing. We started with Betty Cook, spent a bit of time with our Superleague
Driving Divas and now we pay tribute to the women behind the scenes.
IN THE PITS - They arrive at registration smiling, often
with checkbook in hand and family in tow. Their enthusiasm is apparent; they love racing
and enjoy being a part of the team. You find them at the driver’s briefing taking
notes and checking the schedules. Teams rely on these patient moms, wives, girlfriends,
sisters, cousins, nieces and crew members to be there – to make sure that everyone
is fed, to keep the coolers full of ice and cold drinks, to hold the boat, to maneuver
the trailers, to run errands and most of all to offer those words of quiet encouragement
before the starter’s pistol. After the final wave of the checkered flag there they
are, helping to pull equipment from the water, offer words of jobs well done and join in
the victory celebrations or remind you that tomorrow is another day and another chance
at the brass ring.
AT APBA - Ever wonder how your efforts on the racecourse
become APBA statistics? What happens to race results once they leave the capable hands
of the Superleague officials? You need to thank the headquarters staff in Detroit
– those wonderful ladies that answer your questions, track your points, handle
your membership concerns, attend to the APBA web site and publish Propeller. It takes
cooperation between what we do as Superleague (a proud member club of APBA for 24
consecutive years) and APBA headquarters to make your experience in boat racing as
positive as possible.
THE TERRIFIC THREE - Marie, Sally and Janie – the
glue of Powerboat Superleague. Like many of you, they give up weekends and vacation days
to go Superleague racing. They do this because they believe in what we represent and
what we do. Above all they work endless hours to make sure that what we do is accurate,
follows the rules and is as fair as possible for everyone. The terrific three are
available for a hug when necessary, a smile, a bit of advice and a sympathetic ear as
needed. Each understands the value of humor and small diversions as well as the need to
keep the local economy viable in each of our race sites and that restaurants can be a
girl’s best friend, especially at the end of a long, hot and trying day. They
teach us to laugh with them and at ourselves, urging us to keep perspective and to
respect everyone, above they remind us that friendship has no price and that value
cannot be calculated.
These women – all of them – create the platforms that allow
the rest of us to go powerboat racing. To each of them, from all of us – Thank
You.
CONGRATULATIONS -
Superleague extends congratulations to J. Michael Floyd (former F3 driver and current Superleague F2
pilot) on his engagement to Ms Ashley Holloway. Ashley is the daughter of Superleague
Master Scorer Janie Tilton and stepdaughter of the Voice of Superleague Mike Tilton.
Wedding plans are not quite complete but Ashley let us know that it will be in New
Orleans sometime this coming June.
AND THE WINNER IS…
Superleague is pleased to announce the winner of the Olympic Challenge – Greg F. from the Greater
Cincinnati area (and a big fan of the Aurora race) was the random draw from the fans
that sent their email votes. His choice was Mike Hooper, stating that both men had
“a competitive edge that was apparent even in photos.” Greg gets a
Superleague T-shirt and Mike Hooper – who received the most votes – receives
a $10 entry fee discount.
CANDID CONVERSATIONS:
The Driving Divas of Powerboat Superleague -
In the continuing salute to women’s history month and in particular women in powerboat racing
Superleague thought that it would be interesting to open a dialogue with the Superleague
ladies - Carole, Tammy and Stacy - for an insider’s view on what drives them to
race and a bit of what their lives are like off course.
The conversations with Carole and Tammy are below; Stacy sent her
regrets. Right now she is involved in a project but promised to catch up with us
soon.
SUPERLEAGUE: Powerboat racing - it’s
not exactly known as a woman’s sport – so, we’re curious, just what
got each of you started in powerboat racing and in particular, tunnel boat
racing?
CAROLE: My husband Jeff. I watched him for a
year and wanted to try it. I did – loved it. It pumps up your adrenaline.
TAMMY: My father Fred Wolf was the service
manager of Mercury Marine Canada. He was also the head of Mercury’s High
Performance and Racing Division in Canada. He was deeply involved with Canadian
powerboat racing and held many CBF positions. It was normal to have racers like Mark and
Jerry Rothamel, Oley Berkis, Spencer Dunn, Harold “Squeeze-Ball” Wilkenson
and Ted Gryguc at our place. My brother Troy raced tunnel boats winning the Canadian
National Championships in his class every time he competed.
SUPERLEAGUE: How do you prepare for
a race? What happens before you arrive on site; once you get to a race; any special
foods; superstitions? How do you unwind?
CAROLE: I make sure that we –
hopefully – have everything loaded. To unwind I usually drink a cold Miller Lite!
TAMMY: We generally are packed up the
evening before we leave and it normally takes at least four people and about three hours
to get everything into the trailer. All of the boats, the ATV, the extra powerheads,
gearcases, tools, two extra large coolers and of course Etta’s doggy-lodge…
oh yes, we need our personal clothes too. If you need it we probably have it! I have a
specific regiment of going through my boat and motor, along with the inventory of parts
– but I usually do this the weekend before we leave. When we get to the race site,
we check into our hotel and unpack. It’s always nice to get to the race site
– and by the way we always stay at a pet-friendly hotel since we have Etta. How do
I unwind? I see my racing family and friends. We have a really amazing group of people
involved with racing and it’s always exciting to see everyone.
SUPERLEAGUE: Hmmm, no one mentioned
superstitions or special foods.
TAMMY: Superstitions – Well, I wouldn’t
call my personal ritual a superstition but I always pray before I start my heat. I’ve
never without it and it has kept me safe in some serious circumstances.
SUPERLEAGUE: OK ladies; let’s
talk about the personal side of life for a bit. Are there any hidden talents that the
rest of us should know about?
CAROLE: I am an avid bowler and have bowled
on a league for years. I’m also a big NASCAR fan – Dale Jr. is my driver.
TAMMY: Nope! What you see is what you get.
SUPERLEAGUE: How do you fill your
daytime hours?
CAROLE: During the week I work every day as
a purchasing agent at Lextron, Inc. I am also the facility manager for our location. We
sell animal health products for all species. Weekends are spent with Jeff whether we are
working or playing, we’re together. I also love to spend time with my puppy dog
Little Joe. Joe’s a rescue dog , now well-loved; we go walking every day.
TAMMY: I work as a dental hygienist. I am a
work-a-holic when I’m not racing.
SUPERLEAGUE: Each of you has been
given an extra hour in your day; what would you do with the time?
CAROLE: …an extra hour - definitely
Relaxing!!!
TAMMY: I would spend it with friends and
family. No matter what, the people in my life are most important to me. I am truly
grateful for the amazing people that have been and are in my life.
SUPERLEAGUE: Let’s have some
fun. It’s your birthday and Superleague is throwing the party with the ultimate
dessert. What great concoction would you request? Each of you can invite three people
(other than the Superleague gang) from anywhere, any time and any place – who are
your mystery guests?
CAROLE: I don’t eat much in the way of
sweets so I have no idea on dessert. Can I have a nice grilled lobster with a loaded
baked potato and a side salad instead? For my three guests - I would love to have my Mom
and my grandparents. They passed on too early – before I got to know them.
TAMMY: The ultimate dessert would be
ANYTHING from this place called Sugar Bakers in Brunswick, Georgia. Claudia Haraway
introduced me to it and the bakery goods are absolutely to live for! I think that I
would be content to have my husband Mark and the Superleague family to celebrate with
me. However, I would love to have my Grandfather Wolf with me. He passed away in 1984
and was truly an incredible man. I guess that would invite my girlfriend Kim and I would
probably ask Jesus to join us – I have a few questions that I would like to ask.
SUPERLEAGUE: Thanks so much, the
conversation has been perfect but all of us need to go back to race preparation. I have
one last question – If you could do any job in the world for one day, what would
it be?
CAROLE: A Sea World trainer. I would love to
swim with the dolphins and whales.
TAMMY: I don’t know. I have my hands
pretty full right now, why would I take on another job, even if it were only for one
day???
Superleague knew that an interview with the driving divas of tunnel boat
racing would have fast-paced responses that were fun, and thoughtful; a brief glimpse
into their off-water personalities.
CANDID CONVERSATIONS:
Meet Mike Weber -
Powerboat Superleague’s newest Referee
-
Powerboat Superleague Referee Mike Weber is the newest member of the staff but his racing credentials
reach back to 1977 with his first ride, in the 1.5 Litre Stock Inboard class at age 17.
Actually, the Weber racing tradition goes back to 1955, starting with Mike’s
grandfather. As a racer, Weber earned a US 2 title in his second season, and then turned
the boat over to his younger brother Mark, as he headed off to Western Michigan
University to earn a Bachelor’s degree and to start his career in the automotive
industry.
In 1989, Mike, with the help of Jon Staudacher, fulfilled a life-long
dream when he built and then raced My Way, a 5-litre inboard hydro, quickly rising to
the top that same year with the MACH series championship, the Region 6 championship, and
an overall second place in the national points race. By 1991 Weber had earned the
5-Litre National Championship crown and in 1992 he garnered an impressive list of wins
that included the National Championship, the Eastern Divisional, the Inboard
Championship Series and the Zone Quebec titles. Accepting an offer to race the
largest/fastest Inboard class – Grand Prix – in 1993, he was named Rookie of
the Year and a year later earned his place in the winner’s circle for Summit
Racing in a hull that he helped to design and build.
Over the course of the next few years Mike raced a number of classes
earning numerous visits to the podium; posting a few more titles to his resume. Then a
call from Unlimited Hydroplane owner Mike Jones gave Weber the opportunity that had been
his focus since the start of his racing career – the chance to drive an Unlimited.
From his qualification in September of 1997 to the conclusion of the 2007 season, Weber
was the Rookie of the Year (1998) and worked with 5 different Unlimited teams as either
the primary or back up pilot. He became Team Manager and driver of the U-5 / U-7
Thunderbird Products / Formula Boats teams, finding immediate success when they won the
ABRA National Championship in their first season.
Not content to just sit in the cockpit, over the past 24 years Mike has
maintained his interest in boat design and building as well as being involved with APBA
in a variety of capacities from the local and regional levels to national. He has served
on the Inboard Racing Commission and Inboard Board of Governors (and as category chair
for 2 years), the APBA and Inboard Safety Committees, the APBA New Class Committee, the
APBA Board of Directors and Referee several local and national events. According to
Mike, his latest APBA challenge is his appointed role as the Safety and Rescue Committee
Chairman (covering all categories). Giving back to the sport he loves has always been a
priority.
SUPERLEAGUE: We’re ready to
start another great season of racing. In addition to driving boats you also
officiate at Inboard events but we know that there are common areas in boat racing.
Being an official for any sport has challenges. In that capacity, what is the most
difficult part of your job?
MIKE: I would say the toughest part is
balancing the concern for what is happening on the racecourse with what is important to
the fans, the promoter and the race committee. After all, the overall success of the
event must always be a consideration of the Race Committee. I think my involvement with
safety over the past 15+ years gives me a different perspective than some Referees.
Safety and potential liability problems are two areas where I am always on the lookout.
One of my strengths as a referee is that I have been there, lived it AND pulled all of
the tricks in the book. I usually can see what is coming before it happens. And, I can
talk to the drivers from that experience. The racing can sometimes be the easy part! And
for me personally, the tough part this year might be figuring out the LeMans starts. I’m
sure there are some “tricks of the trade” I need to learn quickly.
SUPERLEAGUE: What one thing would each of you like to ask the teams to remember?
MIKE: Rubbin’ is Racing! No, No, No…
did I say that? (ha ha) Seriously, I have always believed you need to work hard and race
your tail off. Just remember to do it the right way. I want to win as bad as anyone but
there will always be another race tomorrow or next week. And we all have to be back at
work on Monday.
SUPERLEAGUE: Why is this important for them and to you?
MIKE: Because none of us are getting rich at
this. Our friends - and all the great people we meet along the way - are what keep us
coming back year after year.
SUPERLEAGUE: What one piece of advice would you give to the powerboat (as a whole not just Superleague) industry?
MIKE: We need to do the best job we possibly
can to present ourselves in a professional manner from the time we leave home until we
put the boat back in the garage on Sunday night (or Monday morning?) People do notice.
And when we do the right things we tend to get invited back. We are all Ambassadors for
APBA, our category, our series, our sponsors and our teams. Never forget that.
SUPERLEAGUE: Do you need to decompress at the race sites? How do you do that?
MIKE: As a racer, you bet! Usually I will
grab my wife or my daughter and go for a walk and check out the crowd; or get a hot dog
or an ice cream. Just get away from the thrashing going on in the pit area for a while.
As an official, I may do the same thing if I can get a break. But finding the time is
usually not as easy. After the races, I enjoy relaxing, a cold beverage and hanging out
with friends.
SUPERLEAGUE: If you could judge or referee one sport, other than boat racing, as a permanent job, which would you choose?
MIKE: Probably NASCAR, I bet the money is good, although a 36-race schedule has to be brutal for those folks.
SUPERLEAGUE: OK, Let’s get personal…
Did you have any childhood heroes? Did they influence your life? How?
MIKE: In racing, Tom D’Eath has always been the guy I admired and looked up to. Tom and Judy were great friends with my parents so I have known them my entire life. When I started racing 5 Litres Tom helped me a great deal. Then when I started racing Unlimiteds, Tom was doing the TV broadcasts; so Mark and I had our own personal coach in the pit area. He taught me about preparation, set-ups and mostly the mental part of racing. He is as good as they get!
SUPERLEAGUE: For some of us racing, in particular Superleague racing is a consuming passion. When you have a moment to relax, what do you do?
MIKE: I do the same thing all the
Superleague racers do. If I am not racing, I am thinking about it, working on it or
trying to find a way to pay for it! My daughter races in the 1.5 Litre class, I am a
partner with my brothers on a 5 Litre and I race a Grand Prix class boat for Dean Rojas
from Lake Havasu, Arizona. So that doesn’t leave much time. Patty and I just
became grandparents in January so I’m guessing Kenley is going to occupy quite a
bit of any extra time we have. She’s precious!
SUPERLEAGUE: How do you fill your daytime hours or those occasional empty time spans?
MIKE: I am a Customer Service Engineer for
General Motors. GM sells transmissions to BMW and I work with the BMW dealers on any
service related issues with our transmissions. I am fortunate to get to work with two of
the world’s great car companies.
SUPERLEAGUE: If you could choose another profession what would you want to do?
MIKE: For sure, it would not be in the
boat-racing world. If it (racing) became a job there would never be a way to get away
from it. And it certainly would not be as much fun. Honestly, I love the auto industry.
Last fall I reached 20 years with GM and I have loved (almost) every job I have had in
that time. I know I am fortunate. Not many people can say that.
SUPERLEAGUE: If you could have a year any place in the world, all expenses paid, where would you go?
MIKE: Probably New Zealand or Australia. I
could go hang out with Peter Knight, Grant Harrison, Kiwi and all the Grand Prix gang
down there. Not to mention, seeing a beautiful part of the world I have always wanted to
see.
SUPERLEAGUE: and, just for fun…
Given the opportunity to sit and have a beer with any three sports figures, from any time and any sport, who would be sharing a brew with you? OK, let’s narrow the field to just powerboat racing – now who is at the bar with you?
MIKE: Since I frequently can (and do) have a
few beers with my good friends in racing, I will stretch the rules a bit and chose 3
guys who are no longer with us.
1. The first person I would invite would be my Dad… Ray Weber. He
died in 1989 that was the first year I ran my new 5 Litre. Mark, Steve, Terry, Jeff,
Alexis and I have won a lot of races and championships along the way and if we could
change anything it would be to have had him there with us. It would be incredible to be
able to have a beer with him and tell him all the stories about what his kids and
grandkids have done. And not just the racing stuff.
2. The next person I would invite has to be Gary Garbrecht. He was an
amazing man in the powerboat racing industry; who also became a good friend. I miss him
a great deal. I will always treasure an evening I spent with Gary and Mike Jones up in
Chelan Washington back around 2004. We just hung out, had a few beers and I listened to
a lot of great stories. He and I had some great debates during those Hydro-Prop days. I’m
not sure I ever won one, but I sure tried! Gary always listened, respected my opinion,
and then did whatever the heck he was going to do in the first place. If you knew Gary,
than you know what I mean.
3. And finally, I would have a Bud Light with 2 great friends (sorry, I
cheated again) who are gone now. The first would be David Sooy. We lost Dave in a racing
accident back in 1977. He was like the big brother to me and we had some great times
together (I hope Mom never heard those stories!). Dave was a great racer and a great
guy. The other would be Terry Troxell, who passed away last summer. Terry and I were
good friends long before he became my brother-in-law and a part of the family. I would
love to give him hell just one more time about how he chopped my ass on the way to his
incredible Gold Cup victory in 2005. He never did see that one quite the same way I
did.

WOMEN IN POWERBOAT RACING – celebrating women’s history month –PART ONE -
In honor of women’s history month (March 1-31) Powerboat Superleague salutes the women –
past and present - that took their talent to the top, honored our sport and worked,
often behind the scene in the pits, at the dock and on the officiating stand, to make
boat racing grow and prosper. This week, we feature the first lady of boat racing
– “supergran” Betty Cook, a grandmother from Newport Beach,
California.
At a time when most of us understand just how physically punishing boat
racing can be Cook started her career in offshore. Her first victory came in 1974 when
she was 51 years old, in the monohull – Mongoose, followed three years later with
the offshore win in Key West, Florida earning the Sam Griffith trophy and the Offshore
World Championship. On May 26, 1978 Betty became the first person to complete the
grueling 580-mile race from San Felipe to Lapaz, down the Gulf of California, in one
day. Coming close was never good enough and she narrowly missed being the first woman to
achieve 100 mph (in offshore) to another famous grandmother – Fiona, countess of
Arran. Cook was, however, gracious in defeat and worked hard, in a variety of specially
designed hulls to take her 15th career victory in 1982 (New Orleans 200), this time in a
catamaran leaving her closest competition two-miles behind.
Betty loved to push hard and force other drivers to run to the absolute
limits. When she ran, Betty Cook and her throttle man John Conners ran at the front and
they ran to win. “Supergran” raced against and often beat the best names in
the offshore division on even terms – fair and square.
Cook died in 1983 leaving behind a powerful powerboat racing legacy.

Television Update -
SportSouth
- If you haven’t had an opportunity to see the 2009 Powerboat Superleague race
from Memphis, Tennessee you should tune in to SportSouth tonight (February 18) at 5 PM.
Think of it as a lead into the 21st Olympics prime time coverage, which usually begins
at 8 PM (eastern time zone).
Make your Best Olympic/Superleague Comparison - Vote and Win -
Sports personalities have common denominators no matter the arena. For the past week, Superleague has
found it interesting to draw comparisons between our favorite Olympians and Superleague
pilots, especially the diverse personalities. It occurred to us that the parallels
between powerboat racing participants and the Olympic competitors are numerous. Who is
your favorite Superleague star and which Olympian does he/she most resemble? Vote today
through the end of the Olympics. A Superleague t-Shirt or entry fee discount coupon
could be yours: list your favorite Superleague driver and the parallel Olympian, the
driver with the most votes receives a coupon for a discounted entry fee and from the
group of voters, a winner will be drawn from all submissions for the free t-shirt.
2010 Schedule Update – Peoria Cancellation -
With regret, Powerboat Superleague announces the cancellation of the race in Peoria, Illinois scheduled
for June 18-19, 2010. The local committee assures us that this has nothing to do with
anything that our organization (Superleague) did or failed to do. A number of
contributing factors led to not holding the Powerboat Superleague races in conjunction
with the annual Steamboat Sports Festival this year, primarily those directly connected
to the local economy.
The local committee regrets the cancellation and is currently working
with us to reconstruct the program and return Peoria to the circuit calendar in 2011. We
understand their position. The race in Peoria is a favorite and we enjoy our friendships
with everyone on the festival committee,” explained Superleague organizers.
“However, no event should go into debt. Festivals, like Steamboat are free to the
general public and therefore must rely on generating sponsorship dollars to cover the
escalating costs (security, general insurance, local utilities, etc.) of festival
production. Bringing a powerboat race into a community is a large undertaking and the
cost goes beyond our contract fees. We wish everyone well and hope to return to the
Peoria area next season.”
Explorations of possible alternatives were explored, including program
changes, and potential budget cuts. “This decision was and is difficult for us, we
do not like to place a race on our schedule unless there is every assurance that it will
happen. We are very disappointed; we regret any inconvenience that the cancellation may
cause but look forward to the possibility of returning in 2011.”
GETTING READY for RACING/ APBA Safety Meeting Update -
Although the 7:30 hour in the morning was a bit too early for most APBA annual meeting
participants, the Safety and Rescue Committee presented one of the best seminars (by Bob
Wartinger/UIM Director of Safety) on what happens during an on-water incident and some
steps that can be taken to limit injuries. These are some of the basics: make sure that
your personal safety equipment is not just current but also reliable. Does your
lifejacket need to be re-certified and/or refurbished? Has your helmet undergone stress?
If so, consider a replacement. How about the chinstraps? Have they rusted? What about
your seat belts? Are they worn, frayed, stretched, and made of nylon? Repeated tests
have demonstrated that using nylon belts when racing under wet conditions (this means
boat racing!) is not as safe as using belts made from polyester. Nylon fabric stretches
in water and the difference could just save your life. Give careful consideration to
your helmet/neck restraints; there are new and improved models in the market place. If
you go to the OPC web site you will find pages of safety information (courtesy of Sam
LaBanco and Tom Stanley); it’s well worth reading. We urge you to take time now,
before the season starts, to check and recheck your personal safety equipment –
your life depends on it.
Superleague/APBA CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR 2010 -
Superleague is pleased to announce the APBA/OPC Commission has awarded the North
American Championship for SST 120, SST 200, and SST 60 to Superleague. We will conduct
the NAC in Pittsburgh as part of the 34th annual Three Rivers Regatta, in addition to
the APBA bonus-points; negotiations have been completed for television coverage (Fox
Sports Network – Pittsburgh). Memphis will host the APBA Southeast Divisionals for
the same classes, again with bonus points and television (SportSouth). We appreciate the
confidence placed in Powerboat Superleague and look forward to seeing everyone.
A thought to get you through the week - An
Indiana University study showed that men use only one side of their brains to listen
while women use both. A finding useful to both males – “I don’t have
full use of my brain…” – and females – “It’s so
tiring to use both sides.”
SAMMY MILLER UPDATE - There is finally
some encouraging news about Sammy Miller. He is breathing on his own - he has been taken
off the respirator, and he is aware of his surroundings. He even asked for his phone so
that he could send a text message! We wish him continuing improvement and quick
recovery.

Powerboat Superleague racing at the 2009 EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta was
recognized by an international awards competition.
The program earned a Gold Award from the 2009 Ava Awards competition. The Ava Awards
recognizes outstanding achievement by creative professionals involved in the concept,
writing, direction, shooting, and editing of audio-visual materials and programs.

A PICTURE WORTH FAR MORE THAN A THOUSAND WORDS -
During a recent meeting
in Marietta, Ohio local race organizers revealed the latest edition of the
Marietta/Parkersburg/Belpre and Vicinity telephone book featuring the annual Powerboat
Superleague event – the Marietta Riverfront Roar as the cover photo. In
circulation until October 2010, the message is clear – the “Roar” is a
vital part of the area. The promotional value of the cover is estimated to be a minimum
of $125,000.00. Our thanks to the AT&T regional marketing unit for recognizing the
importance and economic impact that the race and surrounding “roar” events
have on the
Marietta, Williamstown and Parkersburg areas.
IT’S HERE the 2010 provisional POWERBOAT SUPERLEAGUE RACING SCHEDULE –
The 2010 race schedule was released over the Halloween weekend during the 10th annual
Superleague Saturday Seminar and Awards Program. It’s not too soon to start making
your plans for the 2010 season. Keep in mind that the schedule is always subject to
change – and we make the changes as soon as we receive them. Click on the Schedule
box – found on the left side of the website.
A ROAR OF THUNDER REGATTA CHAIR, CHARLOTTE HASTINGS NAMED 2009 “WOMAN OF DISTINCTION” -
The Dearborn County Chamber of Commerce has named Aurora, Indiana powerboat race
organizer as a 2009 “Woman of Distinction” in recognition of her
contributions to Dearborn County. A native of Aurora, Indiana, Charlotte is involved in
many county-wide as well as Aurora-oriented community projects. Hastings serves on the
Dearborn County CVTB board and the Aurora Main Street program Board of Directors. She is
the hands-on, grass roots organizer responsible for two of the county’s major
events: the annual Aurora Firecracker and Crafts Festival as well as the Powerboat
Superleague event (now one of the largest festivals in the county). In her spare time,
Hastings also volunteers with the Aurora Riverfront Beautification committee, the
organization responsible for the Lesko Park improvements and is also the co-chair for
the Aurora America in Bloom project, part of the national beautification effort. We
congratulate Charlotte and her community spirit. Eleven years ago she had an idea for
Aurora, contacted the Superleague office and worked with a core group of like-minded
citizens to bring tunnel boat racing to Dearborn County, Indiana. Over the years,
through her efforts and those of the race committee, the event has become a perennial
favorite of Superleague teams and fans, earning more than 5 awards. Charlotte has
definitely earned the title – Woman of Distinction.
MEMPHIS TV SHOW BREAKS RECORDS –
SportSouth has just contacted Romesburg Media Group, program producer, with astounding
news. The premier show of the Powerboat Superleague race in Memphis Tennessee –
the Memphis International Riverfront Regatta Can-Am Championship Challenge – has
broken the record for a first-time showing in its category. Stacked against Saturday SEC
football, the show earned a .6 rating in the Atlanta, Georgia market. * When combined
with ratings in the entire area covered by SportSouth (six states and 9 million+
households with television) the number of fans that tuned in is astonishing. On a
college football weekend, where the SEC reigns supreme, the Superleague Memphis show
scored ten times above the normal for a brand new program (usually .0 to .04) exceeding
expectations for the network. As a result of the strong start, SportSouth has agreed to
additional broadcasts.
*SportSouth chooses the Atlanta market as their basis for ratings.
ADDITIONAL MEMPHIS RACE PROGRAM BROADCASTS – The
updated airtimes for the Memphis show are: Thursday, November 5 at 6PM, now there will
be 3 shows on Thanksgiving – Thursday, November 26 at 9AM, 2PM and 6PM followed by
another showing on Saturday, November 28 at 7PM.
PITTSBURGH RACE – TELEVISION BY THE NUMBERS –
Currently standing with nine airings, the Superleague race during the Pittsburgh Three
Rivers Regatta television program produced by Romesburg Media Group has earned a 1.04
CUME. This cumulative (averaged) rating is just for the Pittsburgh market and does not
take into account viewers from the other 10 Dominant Market Areas (DMA) reached by Fox
Sports Network – Pittsburgh. The entertainment value in the program and the fact
that the show covered an in-market event boosted its value. Consequently, FSN Pittsburgh
re-broadcast the program an unprecedented nine times between its premier in early August
and early September.
MEMPHIS TELEVISION PREMIER – The
premier of the Powerboat Superleague television program – The Can–Am
Championship Challenge during the inaugural Memphis International Riverfront Regatta -

MEMPHIS POSTCARD – August 3 - MEMPHIS INTERNATIONAL RIVERFRONT
REGATTA FINAL UPDATE An almost moment was the description for Jeff Reno. It looked to be a repeat of
Reno's
Pittsburgh performance – a come-from-behind win, from last to first but on the
final lap of
the Can-Am Championship, he pulled to the infield handing back to Mike Schubert the lead
that he had given up earlier. Racing under the checkered in the F2 final it was Schubert
(#8,
Richmond, TX) followed by Rob DiNicolantonio (#33, Lakeland, FL) in second and Howie
Nichols (#4, Cocoa, FL) third.
Superleague veteran Sam LaBanco knew that the mighty Mississippi belonged to him when he
posted the best timed lap and earned the pole position. From lap one to lap 20, the race
was
lead by LaBanco. Brent Dillard challenged often and hard, occasionally coming close but
never enough to pass and take over the front position. At the end of 20, Labanco had
landed
a perfect score – pole to pole in the lead for first, Dillard was second and Mike
Hooper held
on to third.
Complete story as well as the result grid and new standings will be posted later in the
week.
MEMPHIS POSTCARD – August 2 -
Occasionally Mother Nature and her minions
win. Heavy rains upstream dealt an equally heavy blow to the regatta today in Memphis.
All
racing was called to a halt when a thunderstorm pelted the area and the river contained
too
much debris to allow safe racing. By late afternoon, the storm had passed and the
river
cleared enough to permit limited testing. Typhoon Tommy and his group of expert jet ski
performers gave the crowds some on-water entertainment and the F2 teams of Rinker,
DiNicolantonio, Schubert, Wolf, Stafford and Terry gave the fans a taste of what is
planned for
tomorrow (Sunday).
MEMPHIS POSTCARD – July 31 - Memphis
has proven to be popular with teams.
Advance registration shows an international field of boats with 17 F2/120s registered,
11 F3
teams and 4 5-Litres. The city, famous for southern hospitality has rolled out the red
carpet
and everyone is eager to see what powerboat racing is all about.
POSTCARD MEMPHIS This weekend, the place to
be is definitely Memphis,
Tennessee. The incredible amount of pre-race promotion has the entire city buzzing about
Superleague powerboat racing. Sports fans are ready for some fast fun and we are ready
to
deliver on that promise. Get ready for some hot-water action with powerboat racing in
two
very different styles - tunnel boats as well as hydroplanes - with an action-packed
schedule of
testing on Friday afternoon followed by time trials, qualifying heats and championship
finals
as well as and jet ski demos all day Saturday. The event offers plenty of food and
beverages
and land activities - including a rock climbing wall and kid's activities along with a
petting zoo.
Once the water calms, the party will move to Beale Street. Check out the Prime Time
sports
bar and take part in the auction for sports memorabilia including a Le Bron jersey and
something from Kobe Bryant. The action returns to the water on Sunday for the running of
the Can-Am Championship Cup. Plenty to see and even more to do at Tom Lee Park in
downtown – July 31 through August 2 – only in Memphis.
MEMPHIS POSTCARD - We are pleased to be working with the Inboard Category's
5-Litre class in addition to our normal tunnel boat program for the F2 and F3. The Memphis
International Riverfront Regatta is a great opportunity to showcase two very different types of
APBA racing – OPC tunnel boats and Inboard hydroplanes. Each category will race on
courses designed to give teams the best shot at capturing the Can-Am Championship Cup.
The tunnel boat course will be the normal Superleague configuration – a four pin rectangle,
approximately 34-35 seconds for the F2 class with a slightly smaller design for the F3 boats.
The Inboard track will be oval in shape and at least 1 ½ miles total distance. The 5-Litre
boats will be crane loaded and the tunnel boats will use the large boat ramp on Mud Island.
IMPORTANT SUPERLEAGUE INFORMATION - If you are planning to attend the Memphis race and you have not sent or advised us of your entry or your fuel requirements, please call or email your information – no faxes please - to the office by 5 PM on Monday, July 27. We are asking that you do this because there has been a death in Sherron’s immediate family. We will retrieve telephone messages and we will have email capability. Thank you for your cooperation.
MEMPHIS POSTCARD – LOCAL SPONSORSHIPS AVAILABLE –
The local producer of the Memphis event, I-Fun Entertainment Group, has advised us that there will be a local sponsorship for every entry in the Memphis International Riverfront Regatta. These sponsorship opportunities are extended to all participants – including the 5-Litre class of Inboards.
SUPERLEAGUE TELEVISION – IT’S SHOWTIME ! - FSN has just released the first set of airdates for the EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta television show featuring Powerboat Superleague to Romesburg Media, the program producer. Scheduled for early August, the program premiers on Saturday, August 8 at 5 PM. The second showing will be Sunday, August 9 at 5 PM and then a prime time viewing on Monday, August 10 at 8 PM. Additional airdates and times include Friday, August 14 at 5 PM and Thursday, August 20 at 7 PM. Some of the times are pre or post Pirate baseball games, allowing the show to capitalize on a targeted audience. Once the program has debuted on FSN, it will be available on the Superleague Digital Media Internet site (www.romesburgmedia.com/superleaguemedia) 24/7. America One (national network) will be submitting their airdate schedule soon and we will advise everyone once we have the days and times.
SUPERLEAGUE FAX NUMBER - There is a typo in the Memphis Gazette. The correct fax number for the Superleague office is 304-455-0027. We apologize for any inconvenience – some times, it’s just a “blonde” thing.
FAN RESPONSE TO MARIETTA – We often hear from fans both before and after an event. This year the emails, letters and calls have been more numerous – ranging from a simple thank you to cannot wait until next year followed by multiple exclamation points. However the overwhelming amount of fan mail post last weekend’s event in Marietta has broken all of the records. Our congratulations and personal thanks to each and every member of all of the Superleague family for giving everyone along the shores of the Ohio River, along the levee, from the mouth of the Muskingum to beyond the Williamstown bridge, a series of races that put the crowd on their collective feet and prompted them to write and to call us.
SUPERLEAGUE RACE BLOGGED - Sports blogger, Robert Brooks, attended the Riverfront Roar in Marietta and discovered the excitement of tunnel boat racing. He has written about the event and the participants as part of his nationwide blog. The Superleague post, complete with photos is on his own site – http://www.rb1331.blogspot.com/ and he is a contributor to the ESPN Sports blog (but no photos) as well.
MARIETTA POSTCARD – “RIVERFRONT ROAR – Race spectators pack levee to watch powerboats” is the front page (top of the fold) headline in the Monday morning edition of the Marietta A.M.
Local authorities estimate that a crowd of more than 30,000 fans arrived on the banks of the Ohio River (at the levee in downtown Marietta) to witness two new North American Champions step into the record books. In F3 class racing, after a series of restarts, Mike Hooper, #52, Markham, Ontario, Canada, claimed first place honors followed by Sam Miller (#7, Kankakee, IL) in second and Brent Dillard, (#80, Dalzell, SC) holding the third place position. Mark Jakob (#7, Clifton, IL) returned to the podium, capturing first place in the F2 class, followed by Lee Daniel (32, North Augusta, SC) in his first podium appearance during the 2009 season with Donnie McDowell (#3, Orlando, FL) rounding out the top three. Complete results grid and new standings will be posted on Tuesday to the Results page of this web site.
MARIETTA POSTCARD -
Entire F3 program was completed prior to having the weather shut us down. Brent Dillard, #80, Dalzell SC has earned the pole, followed by Mike Hooper, #52, Markham, Ontario Canada in second, setting the battle up for continental supremacy and the 2009 F3 North American Championships. The entire F2 program will be raced on Sunday starting at approximately 10:30 am. We encourage all area fans to join us tomorrow for more fast FREE fun - hopefully without any weather related issues.
MARIETTA POSTCARD – The Marietta Gazette mentions only tentative for the chapel service on Sunday morning. Through the efforts of Legacy Ministry, we are pleased to announce that Brian Martin will be joining us and conducting the service. Brian is a native of North Carolina, has not only a degree Masters degree from the Reformed Theological Seminary in Charlotte, NC but also a bachelors degree in chemistry from Erskine College. Currently he lives in Charlotte, NC and works with CSO, a local sports ministry while serving as the Assistant Chaplain for Joe Gibbs Racing (both Nationwide and Cup series). “I have been with CSO/JGR for just under five years and truly love my work,” admits Martin. Make plans to join Brian on Sunday, July 12..
PITTSBURGH Thank you – Jeff Reno would like to thank everyone for all of the help over the Pittsburgh race weekend. In particular, a large measure of thanks goes to his crew chief, Carole Reno and his traveling companions and crew – Bill and Sharon Mastro. Reno would also like to acknowledge Rocky hill, Donnie McDowell, Mark Jakob and Barry Wolf.
PHOTO GALLERY - The Powerboat Superleague Photo Gallery has been updated. We would like to acknowledge the excellent work of Mike Tilton &
Tammy Wolf.
MARIETTA POSTCARD – In just a few more days, two new North American champions will be crowned in Marietta, Ohio during the 2009 edition of the championship races. The race site is a perennial favorite with Superleague teams and Marietta’s local race committee is geared up and ready to go for the tenth running of the annual Marietta Riverfront Roar featuring the F2 and F3 tunnel boat classes. It’s a full schedule of activities and family fun from the first shot of the starting pistol to the last wave of the checkered flag. Join us for some fast FREE fun starting Friday evening, July 10 through Sunday afternoon, July 12
POSTCARD PITTSBURGH – Kristina
Mellinger captured some amazing photos of the Chip Wavro blowover during the F3 final in
Pittsburgh on July 4. She has been gracious in sharing her expert shots with us. They
have been posted to our gallery page.
FIREWORKS IN PITTSBURGH - 4th of July
celebrations are always spectacular
and in certain cities across the United States, certain festivals have a long-standing
tradition
of delivering family events with days full of entertainment that culminate with
fireworks. The
32nd running of the EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta in downtown Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania exceeded expectations and the annual powerboat race, one of the oldest
tunnel
boat venues in the country, provided fans of all ages some of the best finals to date
and
exceeded expectations.
Entertaining an estimated crowd (figures supplied by city police and regatta officials)
of
300,000 spectators, Superleague teams started with a bang and ended with an on-your-feet
finish. The F3 field put the crowd on notice with a with a series of qualifiers that set
the
stage for a fast-paced finish. Brent Dillard earned the pole with back-to-back
first-place
qualifier positions, the remainder of the field was stacked behind him. Out of the
chute, it
was Dillard with Hooper on his tail. For 14 laps positions would be challenged until
Chip
Wavro skyrocketed his #10 entry, forcing a restart. At the end of the final six laps,
Dillard
maintained his dominance over first place followed by Mike Hooper in second and Sammy
Miller in third.
No one expected the fireworks to start before dark, but the F2 field managed to
electrify the
fans with an incredible 30-lap final that brought the crowd to their feet. In a flash of
sheer
grit and determination, Jeff Reno powered his way from last on the dock to a
spell-binding
first-place fireworks finish. Plagued by racing gremlins in Peoria and during the
qualifiers in
Pittsburgh, Reno battled his way to the top of the podium in the best race of his
career.
Donnie McDowell conceded the race to Reno, satisfied with a second place finish with
Mark
Jakob in third.
The complete results grid and new points standings will be posted on Monday and Tuesday.
REGISTRATION for the Superleague race in Pittsburgh -
is coming to a close and the early numbers promise full fields in both the F2 and F3
classes. Defending F3 Champion Brent Dillard (#80/Dalzell, SC) returns to the liquid
track, with Mike Hooper (#52/Markham, Ontario, Canada), Carole Reno (#16/Okeechobee,
FL), and Tammy Wolf-Jakob (#8/Clifton, IL) – all placing in the Superleague final
five at the end of the 2008 season - ready to challenge his position.
Current F2 points leader, Mark Jakob (#7/Clifton, IL) is on the grid with second place
Kelly Kidwell (#77/Troy, MO) and Donnie McDowell (#3/Orlando, FL, the F2 defending
Superleague Champion) just 40 and 50 points (respectively) behind.
Qualifying heats as well as the EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta
Championship will give all of the Superleague teams plenty of opportunities to add to
their point totals and then determine the new leader boards in both classes.
Fans can expect FAST-FREE-FUN on Friday, July 3 when the early arrivals
start their testing rounds at approximately 2 pm. On-water activities will end around 6
pm, followed by the high-wire performance “Walk Over the Water” by Nic
Wallenda. Typhoon Tommy, Rambo Rosie and the rest of their jet ski group will be on the
water in between the tunnel boat races.
Racing starts early on Saturday, July 4th with additional testing
followed by timed laps and qualifying heats for both classes. The Championship finals
are scheduled to start in the late afternoon, approximately 5:30 - 6 PM.
POSTCARD PITTSBURGH – An early weather
report promises the EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta will have a slim chance for rain
on Friday (July 3) and sunny skies for the big July 4th celebration on Saturday. The
best news is the cooler temperatures and lower humidity that are predicted for both days
– at high of 72 degrees on Friday and 80 degrees on Saturday; lows for both nights
will range in the 50s. Perfect conditions for the Powerboat Superleague F2 and F3 races.
APBA DRIVING SCHOOL – REPORT
“I always wondered what it felt like to be in one of those boats.” A
long-time fan of boat racing, Robert Roa was one of the lucky twenty-eight individuals
that had the opportunity to participate in the first APBA Driving School held recently
(May 30-31) in Dayton, Ohio. Bob and his son have been loyal supporters of boat racing
– from the spectator side, enjoying a variety of venues including the Powerboat
Superleague event in Aurora, Indiana. When the information about the Driving School
appeared on the APBA web site, Roa, knowing his dad’s penchant for trying
something new, signed up for both of them. “I always wondered what it felt like to
be in one of those boats,” commented the senior Roa. “Now I know.”
While the purchase of racing equipment is not in the cards for now, “well I need
to start by convincing my wife…” the experience of being in control of a
race boat has definitely been “the ride of a lifetime.”
APBA President, Mark Weber should be congratulated for making the bold
and innovative decision to advance the idea and make the school happen. It took long
hours and contributions from many APBA members to move from the initial concept to the
reality of the weekend experience but everyone agrees that it was an important milestone
in creating an atmosphere of positive change and growth opportunity. Fans interested in
attending the next session should contact APBA headquarters - gloria@apba-racing.com -
to have their name added to the email list used to update future information on APBA’s
Driving School.

RMG BEGINS TENTH YEAR OF AWARD WINNING TELEVISION PRODUCTION
(Somerset, PA) RMG is proud to be celebrating the beginning of its tenth
year of award-winning television production in Somerset.
On June 23, 2000, Jarred Romesburg founded Romesburg Media with the goal
of providing affordable, high-quality television and video productions for businesses
throughout western Pennsylvania.
Since then, RMG has become one of the most decorated and respected
production companies in the region. The company has produced hundreds of productions
ranging from local television commercials to national television programs.
One of their best know regional television programs, “The REMAX
Team, REALTORS Sunday Real Estate Showcase” will be starting its ninth year on the
air and is one of the longest running, non-news programs in the market’s
television history.
RMG’s motorsports television productions have been seen on national
prime time television and have been distributed by broadcast and cable networks that
include America One and SPEED.
RMG has also worked with dozens of local and regional businesses with
marketing, advertising and training productions and campaigns.
Along the way, RMG has been recognized with over two dozen national and
international awards for its productions. The company also recently purchased a 2,500
square foot building that is home to its administrative, editing and, coming at the end
of the Summer, studio production facilities.
“I am extremely thankful to everyone who helped RMG reach this
milestone,” said RMG President Jarred Romesburg. “I am also proud to be an
example of how a high-tech company can flourish in a rural area like Somerset. RMG’s
success is proof that creative businesses don’t necessarily have to be located in
a large, metropolitan area to find success and to serve their clients and community.”

friends, Charlie, died suddenly last week. Cards and expressions of sympathy can be
emailed to them.
MEMPHIS WEB SITE -
The enthusiasm in Memphis for their first powerboat race is overwhelming. Be sure to
visit their web site – www.memphisregatta.com
to find more information on one of the south’s most dynamic city – the
largest in Tennessee.
HAMILTON RACE –
We are canceling the Hamilton, Ohio race scheduled for September 12-13. The extension of
the agreement has expired and while we appreciate the effort that the local committee
made to secure funding, the payment could not be made and the expectation of finding
sufficient money for the 2009 race is not possible. It is our hope that with an
improvement in the economy and additional time Hamilton will return to the Superleague
schedule in the future.

PEORIA POSTCARD – EARLY RACE RESULTS
By the end of the day, Mark Jakob (#7, Clifton, IL – sponsored by Staybridge Inn)
had
mastered the course on the Illinois river in front of an estimated 40,000 fans lining
the
downtown Peoria waterfront.
Jakob posted the best time during the time trials, putting everyone notice that he had
no intention of remaining in the second place slot while earning both the Checkered
Challenger and the Warby Awards. Spectators returned to the rails along the park's
shoreline
all day during the PACE Steamboat Sports Festival to catch the racing action and cheer
Jakob
on to his first win on the Superleague tour.
Donny Lick (#11, Hastings, MN), always in contention, also reached the podium
earning second while Kelly Kidwell (#77, Troy, MO) captured the third place slot.
Complete details, including times and speeds will be posted to the race results page
once all
results have been certified.

Superleague’s first ever race in Memphis on the waters of the mighty Mississippi

“I am excited to be working with the Powerboat Superleague this summer,”

BREAKING NEWS - TESTING IN PEORIA FOR THE F3 CLASS –
Superleague is pleased to announce that we have added testing for the F3 class during
our event in Peoria, Illinois. After a number of discussions with teams that live within
a reasonable driving distance to Peoria, we thought that adding a test session for the
class made good sense. We will open the session for the F3 class on Friday afternoon and
for a limited time on Saturday. The session is sanctioned and insured by APBA and the
Superleague rescue unit, the Peoria rescue unit, as well as Superleague officials will
be covering the water. Cost per driver is $25 and covers both days. You do not need to
pre-register and you do not need to buy fuel for the test session, but if you want the
VP fuel please place your order in writing (email or fax) to the Superleague office.

VP RACING FUELS Becomes a Powerboat Superleague CHAMPIONSHIP CHOICE Sponsor
In racing, winning is about speed and VP Racing Fuels, Powerboat Superleague’s
newest Championship Choice sponsor, understands that speed comes with optimum engine
performance. The World Leader in Race Fuel Technology, VP has developed nearly 70 fuels
to optimize performance in applications across the motorsports spectrum, two of which
have been designated as spec fuels to help Superleague competitors in their quest for
speed.
Unleaded MS 93 is an unleaded fuel with a motor octane of 90, designed
for lower compression engines in racing venues requiring a consistent, cost-effective
fuel. MS 93 is the designated/spec fuel for the Pro Truck and Rmax Challenge circuits
and filled the same role in the original ASA series for many years. VP Marine is
formulated for high-performance marine engines that require more octane than pump gas.
With a motor octane of 97, it produces more power and superior throttle response while
protecting against pre-ignition and detonation. Both MS 93 and VP Marine are the only
legal fuels for Powerboat Superleague circuit. (See individual APBA sanctions, Powerboat
Superleague series rules and Superleague race Gazettes)
This year, VP’s championship choice sponsorship includes yearend
awards for drivers in both classes. The top three in F2 and F3 will receive certificates
for 2010 fuel purchases – 15 gallons for first, 10 gallons for second and 5
gallons for third. Additionally, the Rookie of the Year in each class will receive a
fuel certificate for 10 gallons, Most Improved Drivers will earn 5 gallon certificates.
Detailed information on MS 93, VP Marine and VP’s other products can be found on
VP’s web site – www.vpracingfuels.com. If you have a specific technical
question related to fuel and cannot find the answer on VP’s site, click on the
special section titled “TECH/TUNING FAQs” to submit your question to one of
VP’s technical specialists.
Powerboat Superleague is proud of their association with VP Racing Fuels
and we welcome them to our Championship Circle.
UPDATED FUEL INFORMATION - in response to
driver/team requests, we are going to include the MS 93 as well as the VP Marine as the
only legal fuels for Powerboat Superleague events. As noted on the APBA sanctions, these
are the only legal fuels for Superleague events so keep this in mind when you are
ordering. We understand how expensive racing has become and we are always looking for
methods of simplifying life at the race site, therefore, we have changed one policy and
absorbing part of the cost. 1) – The minimum fuel order, per entry, in both
classes is now 5 gallons. The cost per gallon is $9 for either type and it is the best
price that could be negotiated. VP Racing Fuels has become a major sponsor of the
circuit this year and they will be awarding certificates for fuel as year-end prizes in
both classes. Details of their sponsorship will be posted soon. Additionally, 2)
Super-league will pay the cost of on-site delivery and we will not pass that cost on to
the teams. As we have done in the past, we must place the entire fuel order for each
event in advance, so we must have your fuel orders in writing – either by email or
fax. Once placed, we cannot add to the amount and we will not have extra fuel once the
delivery is made. The fuel arrives from the VP distributor in 5-gallon cans (15 gallon
mini drums must be special ordered). These are disposable, metal containers. This fuel
is the fuel of the day as stated in our rules and on the APBA circular and it is a
condition of racing. Orders will be filled in 5-gallon increments.
Memorial Service Information for Jim Tilton
We just wanted to let everyone know of the final arrangements for Mike's father, James
Tilton.
There will be a Mass and Memorial Service on Monday at 11:00 am. The service will be
held at Mater Dolorosa Church on Carrollton Ave, New Orleans. No wake will be held as
Papa had chosen to donate his body to Tulane University Medical School for the
advancement and education of future physicians.
Both of us appreciate all of the kind words and prayers that our friends have extended
to our family. Your thoughtfulness has been such a comfort to us at this difficult time.
– Mike and Janie Tilton
SUPERLEAGUE EXTENDS DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO MIKE TILTON on the
death of his father. Jim Tilton, affectionately known as “Poppa” died on
Thursday morning, May 14, after a brief fight with cancer.

PITTSBURGH THREE RIVERS REGATTA TO BE TELEVISED
Fans of tunnel boat racing will have an opportunity to relive the excitement of the 2009
Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta featuring the Powerboat Superleague circuit both on
television and on the Internet. Romesburg Media Group LLC, award-winning producer of
past Superleague races, has been contracted to film the 32nd edition of the popular
Pittsburgh event on the 4th of July. Known for their quick turn-around time, Romesburg
expects the initial broadcast to be during the month of August. FSN (Fox Sports Network)
Pittsburgh has been chosen to air the initial run of programs, which will then be
released for national and international distribution including America One. Once the
show has been broadcast, you can catch the action on the Superleague Digital Media web
site (available 24/7).
The regatta, Pittsburgh’s official July 4th celebration, annually
attracts over 1 million visitors to downtown Pittsburgh. With the completion of the work
at Point State Park, the festival will cover both sides of the Allegheny River giving
race fans terrific viewing areas including the bleachers at Point State Park and the
great lawn area on the north shore. It will be a win/win opportunity for the State of
Pennsylvania, the City of Pittsburgh, the Three Rivers Regatta and the Superleague
circuit teams.
Powerboat Superleague is the oldest APBA sanctioned powerboat series,
operating under the same ownership and management since it’s inception. Known for
energy-packed racing, Superleague is celebrating twenty-three, consecutive years in
racing. Additional circuit information can be found by visiting the Superleague web
site: www.aprsuperleague.com. Visit the regatta web site –
www.threeriversregatta.net - for complete regatta/event information, including schedule
updates and a complete list of activities and attractions.
HOST HOTELS FOR PEORIA, PITTSBURGH and MARIETTA Superleague
designated host hotels have been posted to this web site for the Peoria, Pittsburgh and
Marietta races. Keep in mind that the room block sells out quickly. We work directly
with the local Convention and Visitors Bureau in each of our venues to find the best (in
this order) price point – usually a group discount rate, parking, amenities and
location. Understanding that most of you are following strict racing budgets, we try to
negotiate the best possible price. There may be closer, more convenient facilities, but
they are more expensive.
AURORA RACE COMMITTEE RECEIVES SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD
The Aurora Riverfront Beautification Committee has proven their commitment to excellence
for ten consecutive years. Over time, they have created a great event – the annual
A Roar of Thunder regatta - backed by the local government, the area businesses and
public agencies in Dearborn County, Indiana. ARB, through their promotional efforts, has
also developed a wonderful and knowledgeable fan base. To honor this long-standing
allegiance to powerboat racing and specifically to Powerboat Superleague, Aurora has
been awarded a Certificate of Appreciation and Excellence. “We wanted to
acknowledge the support of and the commitment to powerboat racing by a local community
organization and their host city. Teams have awarded this site as the circuit’s
best for a number of years and it remains a perennial favorite,” noted Sher
ron
Winer, Superleague partner. “It’s one of the best places to race. The
people, the hospitality and the fun of being in a downtown location along with excellent
support from both the private and public sectors as well as the promotional support from
the Dearborn County Convention, Visitor and Tourism Bureau have made ARB and the annual
A Roar of Thunder event a model for other events across the United States. Everyone in
Aurora should be proud of the distinction of this award. Statistically, the annual
regatta translates to increased economic impact, wider media exposure and what is
extremely important in these difficult economic times, giving regional residents a
weekend of free family fun. When other venues are struggling and adding admission
charges - sometimes as high as $20 per day per person - the value of the Aurora races
hits the mark. We are so proud of our association with ARB, and the Race Committee.
Their honor is well deserved.
A GENTLE REMINDER - Superleague rules cover
myriad items not found in the APBA rulebook. They are written to help the circuit
remain viable, to encourage sportsmanlike conduct both on and off of the water and they
also serve as guidelines for professionalism. This seems to be a good time to
remind all teams that if they have made promises to their sponsors to sell their
products at Superleague events, you must confirm your ability to do so at each
race/event site THROUGH THE SUPERLEAGUE OFFICE. (See rule #14) Selling from
your pit area, whether it is your sponsors’ products or your own T-shirts, is not
allowed unless you contact us. We must all keep in mind that vendor sales, and
when you sell, you are a vendor, remains the right and privilege of the event producer
and carries a site/producer designated vending fee. Additionally, you also become
liable for procuring a vendor’s license (fee for obtaining a license) for that
city and you are responsible for paying all local, state and federal taxes that are a
result of the sales. Under no circumstances should you contact the site producer
directly. We will do our best to assist you in achieving what you may personally
need but remember that if there is a conflict of interest between your sponsor product
and a site sponsor the site will always take precedent.
GARY PUGH UPDATE -
Superleague spoke with Gary Pugh earlier this week. He is recovering, albeit slowly, and
hopes to be back at work as soon as his doctor permits him to do so. While Gary was
making plans to race with us this season, he admits that he won’t be racing this
year but wants to come back in 2010. However, he does plan to come to at least one of
the Superleague events in 2009 and will see everyone then.
BREAKING NEWS - In a brief
statement ISM USA, event management company for the Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta,
announced that the Powerboat Superleague circuit would be the race provider for the
annual event. For tunnel boat fans, the addition of the Superleague series means that
they will have the opportunity to see both the Formula Three (F3) and Formula Two (F2)
classes in an expanded on-water program as well as the chance to meet the teams in the
powerboat village/cold pit areas over the July 4th holiday (July 3-4, for racing).
"It is exciting news for Superleague drivers and teams," stated Sherron Winer,
Superleague partner. "The Three Rivers Regatta is well-known in racing circles as
one of the oldest and the most prestigious tunnel boat venues. We are pleased to be back
in a dynamic market with knowledgeable fans." For information on the Pittsburgh
Three Rivers Regatta, visit their web site - www.threeriversregatta.net.

and I am certain we will rise to the occasion.” Officials for Superleague added
that, “the combination of a professional production company and the nation’s
foremost tunnel boat tour for F2 and F3 presents a formidable media package. Adding the
availability of the programs to the Internet via the Superleague digital media site in
2008 maximized the coverage and the investment made by our clients and
sponsors.”
Both companies look forward to the 2009 season and the coverage of at least two of the
circuit’s venues.

POWERBOAT SUPERLEAGUE RACE TO BE SEEN IN EUROPE
Powerboat Superleague’s UIM World Championships races (held in Marietta during the
2008 racing season) will receive world coverage in early 2009. Romesburg Media
Group LLC (RMG) has just informed Powerboat Superleague that the award-winning program
featuring the F2 and F3 World Championships has been chosen by a new cable channel to
air in select European countries. Delivering the show to three million households
across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Northern Italy, the new channel
chose the Powerboat Superleague program because it fit their profile of sports and news
as well as providing a platform for audiences that want to learn English (or enhance
their English-speaking skills).
“It’s an exciting accomplishment and an honor to
have our work chosen to air in Europe,” said RMG President Jarred Romesburg. “We
are excited that our show will be among the first sports programs on the new channel.” “It
certainly widens the Superleague audience,” commented Sherron Winer. “We
have been seen in Europe in the past, so the opportunity to re-introduce our circuit to
a new audience is terrific.”
Original coverage of the show produced by RMG was seen
regionally on FSN Pittsburgh and nationally, in prime time, on America One network. With
the addition of the European countries, the program will be delivered to 40 million
households via television and many more via the 24/7 availability of the show on the
Internet.
